Of the top ten songs on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of June 26, 2021, more songs than not feature rap. These songs have been on the Hot 100 for a combined 96 weeks. This is a true testament to the genre’s popularity at the moment, as it continues to dominate on Billboard’s charts. Through a combination of sales and streaming figures, rap has become a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.
What’s notable is that of the six songs featuring rap, only two songs are performed solely by rappers. These two songs sit at numbers eight and nine, and are both below the four songs on the chart which feature rap only in part. This means that while rappers are certainly in demand as solo artists, there is a big desire in the music industry to have rappers team up with singers to create chart-topping hits.
